About the Surgery
The best time to crop a puppy’s ears is between 8-11 weeks of age. For the cropping surgery to be performed the puppy is placed under general anesthesia for about 20-45 minutes depending on the length of the crop. They will remain in the hospital for observation until they are ready to be sent home with the owner (usually same day). Since pain control is of the utmost concern they will have 2 different kinds of pain medication as well as antibiotics sent home with them. The sutures will remain in place for 10 days at which time they are removed. The reason for this timing is to allow enough healing to take place but not long enough for them to become embedded into the ear leaving scars.
It’s also important for an owner to understand they will be fully responsible for the after-care process, which is just as crucial as the procedure itself. The actual surgery gives the ears the desired shape and length, but posting (or taping) the ears must be done for a period of time to train the ears to stand up. The length of time that posting will need to be done depends on the individual dog’s genetics (how thick/strong the ears are) as well as the desired length and shape of the ear. In general short ear crops will need 6-8 weeks of posting while the longer ear crops will take 4-12 months of posting. If the owner can not commit to the aftercare then the ear crop should not be performed.
